Do It Yourself Home Security Tips
When Planning A Vacation

The following do it yourself home security tips and advice will show you what you can do to protect your home while you're away.

Because...

Taking a vacation is an exciting time for everyone.

Coming back and finding out that your home was burglarized is devastating.

Home safety tips for vacation Don't advertise it - When planning a vacation, make sure you don’t advertise it publicly.

The less people who know that you will be away from home the better.

You can tell a few close family members and trusted friends.

But, don't tell the whole world.

Wait until you return from your trip to tell people what a great time you had.

Luggage ID tag Luggage ID tags - When packing your bags, never fill out the Luggage ID tag that comes with the luggage.

Write down your information on a piece of paper and keep it inside the luggage.

Why?

Because burglars and thieves also go to the airport.

And your personal information on the ID tag of your suitcase can be viewed by them or anybody else for that matter.

They know you're leaving and that your home will most likely be unoccupied.

If they have your name and destination information, they may be able to find your home address.

Don't give them that opportunity.

What if your bags get lost?

If it does happen,, the airline can look inside your bag for information of ownership.

Full mail box Maintain your home's exterior - While on vacation, make sure that you maintain your home's exterior.

This do it yourself home security tip is very easy to implement.

Basically, you want to create the illusion that someone is always home.

So, what can you do?

Simple...

Arrange to have your mail picked up.

Have someone routinely cut your grass or shovel the snow.

On garbage day, have one of the neighbors put out the trash for you.

A simple and effective home safety tip is to ask one of your neighbors to park their car in your driveway while you’re away.

If you leave your car at home, have someone move it from time to time.

You can be on vacation, but your home must give the illusion that there is always someone home.

Notify alarm company Interior home safety tips - Protecting the interior of your home is extremely important especially when you're away.

What can you do?

Apply good do it yourself home security advice and notify your alarm company that you're going on vacation.

Don't forget to tell them how long you will be away for.

And then of course arm your alarm system before you leave.

The interior of your home must also look occupied and lived-in while you're away.

How do you do this?

By using automatic timers to turn on your lights, television sets and radios.

By turning off your telephone ringer before you leave on vacation. A phone that rings endlessly and is never answered is a clear sign that no one is home.

You can make sure your answering machine does not mention your absence.

Unplug your garage door opener so that no one with a similar remote can possibly open your door.

A very important (but often overlooked) safety tip is to leave a contact phone number with a trusted neighbor or a close relative.

In the event of an emergency, they will have a way to reach you.

These do it yourself home security tips are designed to keep your home safe and secure while you're on vacation.

Don't forget to pack the suntan lotion.
