The Security Control Panel

All the components and sensors connect to the control panel, making home security possible.

It's usually found at the end of the line of all security layers.

In hardwired DIY home alarm systems it’s the metal box that’s usually installed in the closet. It contains a circuit board and a back-up battery.

It’s typically called the control panel.

In wireless DIY home alarm systems it looks a little like a keypad.

It‘s a fully functional self-contained unit that’s usually equipped with a large LCD display.

It’s commonly referred to as the home base station.

The security control panel is the device that receives a signal from the components and sensors and triggers the alarm.

Depending on the setup of your DIY home burglar alarm system, the security control panel is the unit that dials out for help.

Depending on the type of control panel you have, it can call the authorities directly, or it can contact a central monitoring station, or pre-entered numbers of responsible individuals on a call list.

In more recent models, the security control panel can even be configured to text message or email you in the event of a problem.
