How DIY Home Alarm Systems Work
To Protect Your Home

Diy home alarm systems are built on the same basic principles as company installed home alarm systems.

They protect you and your family by creating multiple layers of security in and around your home.

There are four standard layers of security available, depending on the type of diy system and components you choose to install.

(Let's start with the outer-most and work our way in...)

The First Layer:

Exterior home security The first layer of a well-designed DIY home burglar alarm system helps you setup exterior home security.

It provides protection against an intruder actually approaching your home.

It uses components that can detect and notify you of an intruder the moment he sets foot on your property.

The moment he trespasses.

The Second Layer:

Perimeter home security The second layer of any first-rate home burglar alarm system establishes perimeter home security.

It provides protection against a burglar making it past the first layer of security and attempting to break into your home.

It uses components that can detect and notify you of a possible break-in the moment any of your doors or windows are opened.

The Third Layer:

Interior home security.

The third layer of any good quality DIY home burglar alarm system establishes interior home security.

It provides protection against a burglar making it past the first two layers of security and actually being in your home.

It also provides protection against any environmental changes that can be a danger to you and your family.

The Fourth Layer:

Personal home security.

The fourth layer of any complete home burglar alarm system establishes personal home security.

It provides protection against a burglar making it past the first three layers of security and now being a direct threat to you and the ones you love.

It shows you what equipment you can install to insure the personal safety of both you and your family.

The equipment will allow you to call for help if you're in a difficult situation and don’t have direct access to a telephone.

These are the basic principles that practically all DIY home alarm systems are built upon.

They protect your home by establishing layer upon layer of security.

Some DIY home burglar alarms incorporate all security layers mentioned above.

Others use only a few.

Now we need to discuss how these four layers of security are managed.

We need to talk about...

The Security Control Panel

The security control panel is the brain of the home alarm system that manages all the established layers of home security.

All the components and sensors connect to the control panel, making home security possible.

It's usually found at the end of the line of all security layers.

In hardwired DIY home alarm systems it’s the metal box that’s usually installed in the closet. It contains a circuit board and a back-up battery.

It’s typically called the control panel.

In wireless DIY home alarm systems it looks a little like a keypad.

It‘s a fully functional self-contained unit that’s usually equipped with a large LCD display.

It’s commonly referred to as the home base station.

The security control panel is the device that receives a signal from the components and sensors and triggers the alarm.

Depending on the setup of your DIY home burglar alarm system, the security control panel is the unit that dials out for help.

Depending on the type of control panel you have, it can call the authorities directly, or it can contact a central monitoring station, or pre-entered numbers of responsible individuals on a call list.

In more recent models, the security control panel can even be configured to text message or email you in the event of a problem.
