Remote Access - The homeowner can access the security system from anywhere via a PC, laptop, cell phone, PDA or similar device. Remote access of your security system.

Stand-alone DIY systems allow the user to remotely perform basic functions like:

  • Verify the status of the alarm system
  • Receive e-mail notifications
  • Receive text message notifications

This is made possible through home security software and the homeowner’s PC acting as dedicated Web server.

They also provide more advanced interactive features like the ones mentioned in the next section.

Central station monitored DIY security systems include the above-mentioned features as well.

Homeowners usually have access to these services via the alarm company’s website.

However, alarm companies usually charge the homeowner an extra monthly fee for access to the advanced interactive features mentioned below.



Advanced Interactive Features - These are the features that have put the control of home security monitoring in the hands of the homeowner.

Remotely control advanced interavtive features. They make the most use of recent breakthroughs and innovations in technology.

They can include the ability to remotely:

  • Arm/disarm the alarm
  • Enable/disable live video surveillance
  • Enable/disable video capture
  • Position the security cameras
  • Control the lights
  • Control the thermostat
  • Lock/unlock the door locks

They give homeowners the cutting-edge tools they need.

These tools allow them to provide better home security surveillance and home protection from anywhere in the world.

One of the biggest factors has been the development of better home video security systems.



Advantages/Disadvantages - There are two main advantages to the technology-based monitoring option.

Home security software allows for greater control over your DIY home security system. Homeowner has greater control over the security system.

They also have better access to the information being recorded by the system.

The main disadvantages are the limitations found in the industry.

Not all alarm companies and monitoring centers support DIY home security systems.

Certain security systems do not offer video surveillance or home automation services as of yet.
